The 1920s were an exciting time to live. Also referred to as the "golden age twenties", because of the economic boom following World War I, it was an era of social, artistic and cultural dynamism.
Many movements flourished around the world, bringing changes that would influence arts and lifestyle until today. In the 20s, jazz blossomed, Art Deco peaked and knee-length skirts and dresses became socially acceptable. Imagine how crazy life was back in those days!
In Germany, the most prominent movement was Bauhaus. It was an art school operational from 1919 to 1933 that combined crafts and the fine arts. The school became famous for its approach to design, which attempted to unify the principles of mass production with individual artistic vision and strove to combine aesthetics with everyday function. Its ideas were so revolutionary that they impact our lives until today.
An instigator in the minimalism trend which is still one of the most popular styles to date, Bauhaus helped the design world step away from the ornate designs of the early 20th century with its emphasis on function over form. Other leading styles, like Scandinavian, industrial and mid-century modern, are unmistakable in their Bauhaus influences, showing how far the spread of the school's teachings have reached.
Scandinavian design: light colours, wood, clean lines
But Bauhaus was about design for everyone, which didn't sit brilliantly with the Nazis who considered it to be "degenerate". In 1933, the school was closed under pressure from the Nazi regime, having been painted as a centre of communist intellectualism. Although the school was closed, the staff continued to spread its idealistic precepts as they left Germany and emigrated all over the world. Ironically that's why its influence is still present until today in our lives.
That being said, we would like to offer you some posters ideas and inspiration to add Bauhaus design to your home decor.
